Serve
as the Chapter Advisor
 The Chapter
Advisor fulfills the most active alumni role in the chapter. He is the day to day
supervisor of Texas Gamma and all its officers and chairmen. He acts as a mediator
between the chapter and other outside entities such as the national headquarters
or the university. He carefully oversees and manages the transition of new officers
and ensures the forward progression of the fraternity.
The role consists of regular meetings with not only the chapter itself, but also
the campus Greek Advisor and other members of the university and Greek community.
Any brother who wishes to take on the role of Chapter Advisor should live within
commutable distance of San Marcos, and will be expected to attend at least two chapter
meetings per month, as well as other chapter functions. Additionally, he will serve
as the de-facto chapter alumni representative to GAC and other national conferences.
The Chapter Advisor is nominated by the chapter, appointed by the Executive Council,
and serves for a two-year term beginning in June of each odd year. This is of course
an amazing way to become involved, but make no mistake: anyone serving as Chapter
Advisor will be taking on a full-time responsibility.
Serve
as the Finance Counselor
If you are a Certified Public Accountant or at least have some experience working
in the field of finance/accounting, then perhaps you should consider serving the
chapter as a Finance Counselor. As such, you would help secure the financial future
of the chapter by training and advising the chapter’s Treasurer to better
perform his duties. You will help give advice to the fraternity regarding the creation
of a fiscally sound annual budget, maintain correspondence with the national fraternity
concerning their financial interests, and annually examine the books of the chapter.
This is an indispensable position that the chapter desperately needs fulfilled in
order to insure its future and financial security. You do not need to live in the
San Marcos area to serve as the Chapter Financial Advisor.
Serve
on the Chapter’s House Corporation
If your professional expertise is in the real estate, legal, or financial fields,
then your skills would be more than welcome on the Chapter’s House Corporation.
Obviously the House Corporation’s primary purpose is the research, paperwork,
and ultimately the fundraising that is required to purchase a permanent house for
Texas Gamma. The House Corporation typically meets 2-4 times per year, usually in
conjunction with other chapter alumni events. (i.e. Founder’s Day, Homecoming,
etc.) You do not need to live in the San Marcos area to serve as on the Chapter
House Corporation.
Serve
on the Alumni Relations Committee

As a permanent member of the chapter’s Alumni Relations Committee, you will
assist the undergraduates in the planning and implementation of the very programs
which are designed for you and your fellow alumni. (i.e. Founder’s Day, Homecoming,
tailgating, Summer Float Trip, etc.) This committee will be headed by the chapter’s
Alumni Relations Chairman, and will consist of approx. 3-6 undergrads and 6-10 alumni.
This is an extremely hands on way to become involved in improving the alumni programming
at Texas Gamma. It is also perhaps the most rewarding opportunity for alumni, since
you will have the most influence over what kind of alumni events we'll ultimately
host.
While the undergraduates will still be carrying out the greatest share of the committee’s
work, the alumni may be called into town for meetings several times a semester,
to offer their insight and resources to the chapter’s alumni programming endeavors.
Because of this, it would be preferred, though not required, that a majority of
the committee’s alumni members live in or around the San Marcos / Austin /
San Antonio area and would be willing to meet in San Marcos 2-4 times per semester.
Become
a Decade Captain
In an attempt to bridge the gap between alumni and active chapter members, the chapter
is enlisting the help of several representatives from each era of the fraternity
in order to aide in communication. These “decade captains” are trusted
to help keep up the lines of communication between the chapter and the members closest
to themselves in age or year of initiation. Most alumni, if given a choice, would
prefer to recieve information about alumni events and other Phi Psi news from their
own pledge brothers, rather than an undergraduate they have never met. By using
decade captains, we'll be able to follow up our initial invitations to alumni events
with personal phone calls encouraging our alumni brothers to attend. The responsibility
of organizing pledge class reunions (i.e. 10 year, 20 year, etc.) will also fall
largely on these men. We are currently looking to fill the following decade captain
positions for the chapter:
- from the 1960’s: someone involved in the original chartering group.
- from the 1970’s: someone from ’70-’75 and another from ’75-‘80
- from the 1980’s: someone from ’80-’85 and another from ’85-‘90
- from the 1990’s: someone from ’90-‘93
This system of communication has the potential to greatly increase the level of
alumni involvement with the chapter. You do not need to live in the San Marcos area
to serve as a Decade Captain.
Donate
to the Chapter Scholarship Fund
 The Chapter Scholarship Fund
(CSF) is an account within the Endowment Fund of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. Each
Chapter Scholarship Fund is set up to receive gifts and restrict them for the benefit
of their specific chapters. The money can’t be used for any other chapter,
or for the general Endowment or Fraternity. The Trustees of the fund will make available
5% of the end-of-year balance of each CSF for scholarships. So, if you have
a balance of $100,000, Texas Gamma can expect to award $5,000 in scholarships during
the next academic year, and each and every year after that. In addition, all capital
raised by the Endowment Fund may be loaned back to the chapter for the purchase
of a house at a later date. All gifts to the Chapter Scholarship Fund are tax-deductible
to donors, so do your part to help the chapter and help us build our CSF!
Attend
Rush Events / Initiations / Chapter Meetings
Perhaps the simplest way to be involved is just showing your face! Attend a pledge
class initiation; share some experiences with a rushee; pop in to the occasional
chapter meeting. Attendance at each and every one of these things helps show our
newer members that being a Phi Psi does not have to end after college and that the
bonds of brotherhood which we form here are truly eternal.
